Quakers in Australia

NSW Regional Meeting - Reflections On the Australian Quaker Centre - 29 May APPENDIX 2

APPENDIX 2

SUMMARY OF WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS; POINTS FOR AND AGAINST AN AQC AT SILVER WATTLE

1. Advantages

  1. Remoteness from other distractions and interference. Allows for greater depth of experience
  2. A centre for Australian Quakerism lacking, sense of special place to retreat to when needed.   Fills an identified need. Good for children and young f/Friends to have a place to identify as Quaker and build community connections over time.
  3. Program underway and can be continued and built upon.  Many have valued experiences there.
  4. Unique environment to demonstrate the effects of degradation and potential for remediation or continued decline of fragile ecosystem.
  5. Intentional community potential for a small Quaker Community to be resident there.
  6. Close to national capital may assist Quakers to take a greater role in the national agenda not just a sideline participant. Potential for nearby Quaker Community to support the AQC.

2. Disadvantages

  1. Remoteness from medical care.  Remote from most places in Australia, not near a major airport allowing frequent one stop flights.
  2. Site not purpose built for our needs, large property with many other needs to fix.
  3. Drain of local meeting resources people, time, ongoing meetings to consider financial support having to choose between people for limited assistance.
  4. Financial viability in the long term, ongoing maintenance, small Quaker community to draw upon for courses etc.  Limited Quaker dollars, QSA may suffer.
  5. Would we be considering this with urgency if Silver Wattle were not for sale?  Alternatives available like AQC on the road. Perhaps the vision is too big too quick, start smaller, test the leading and build as we go in the future.
  6. Limited number who could/would access AQC at one location each year.  Another use for the property by other groups on a regular basis has not been fully identified.
  7. Clash with other gatherings on at the same time or close together in timing.  Many will not afford AQC and YM cost.
  8. Opportunity cost of what we could use money for instead (other concerns etc). Is this the best use of limited finances?  Lack of detailed financial data makes it difficult to fully be supportive.
  9. We already own Quaker properties underutilized eg Werona, Friends School, Deep South, Meeting Houses.
  10. Does not meet all our Quaker Learning Needs and many will remain unfulfilled with this model. A network model more conducive to our needs. We have weaknesses with communication etc that need to be addressed and purchase does not address that.
  11. Silver Wattle has some extremes in temperature in Winter and Summer making it difficult to heat/cool and allow for comfort of Friends who may avoid it at these times.
