Yearly Meeting

Yearly Meetings are held annually in January, usually for seven days. All Friends within Australia are welcome to attend.

Sequence of Yearly Meetings

Yearly Meetings travel from one state to another, in a set pattern —

  • Tasmania 2016
  • South Australia 2017
  • New South Wales 2018
  • Tasmania 2019
  • West Australia 2020
  • Canberra 2021
  • Tasmania 2022
  • Queensland 2023
  • Victoria 2024

Venues

Yearly Meetings are held at a time when cleaning staff are often on holidays. To avoid misunderstandings about the status of rooms hired, the YM 2012 Planning Committee recommends that:

  • when the venue is handed over, that both parties walk around the rooms together and note the status of each room
  • when the venue is handed back, that again both parties walk around the rooms together and sign off on the status of the rooms as being in an acceptable state
  • a Venue Document in table format be used to keep track of the use and status of the rooms. Headings for the table could be: Building, Room, Status on arrival, Used for, Status as left

Next Yearly Meeting

For details on the next Yearly Meeting go to January of next year in the Calendar of Events.

What is a Yearly Meeting?

When people say 'Yearly Meeting’ they can mean either:

  • The fellowship of Friends throughout Australia (i.e. all members and attenders of the seven Regional Meetings, close to 2000 Friends), which constitutes Australia Yearly Meeting.
  • The occasion when Friends gather in a particular place for 7-8 days, usually in January each year. These gatherings are organised by a different Regional Meeting each year, and held in that state or territory. Information about the upcoming Yearly Meeting and a registration form is published in the July and September issues of The Australian Friend.

The annual Yearly Meeting gathering has the following purposes :

  • Considering matters of concern and reports from the various Committees of the Society
  • Considering matters of concern and reports from all the Regional Meetings
  • Conducting a Summer School on a particular theme, where Friends discuss and share in small groups
  • Having Fellowship and sharing information with as many Friends as possible.

Before Yearly Meeting, Documents in Advance (DIA) are published in print form and on the website (go to Events, slide down to Yearly Meetings, and click on DIA). These document sinclude reports on the work undertaken by the varying committees of the Society, and from these arise issues which need a decision. You can purchase these documents from your Local Meeting.

Meetings are invited to discuss the issues raised, and the the feedback from each Regional Meeting is collated and displayed to all Friends at Yearly Meeting. In this way, members who cannot be at Yearly Meeting can still participate in the decision-making.

After Yearly Meeting, Documents in Retrospect (DIR) are published, again in print form and on the website (www.quakers.org.au, Events/Yearly Meeting, etc.). In this way, all Members are kept informed about the issues that are being considered within the Society in Australia and decisions that may affect them.
