Queensland Regional Meeting

In the 1860s Quakers settled in Queensland, first around Brisbane and then in the districts of Buderim and Rockhampton. The history of Quakers in Queensland is the history of individuals rather than Meetings. Two of the first famiies to arrive were the Smith and Hopkins families. (paraphrased from William Oats: A Question of Survival, Quakers in Australia in the Nineteenth Century, UQ Press 1985.

Today, the largest group of Quakers hold Meeting for Worship in Queensland is at the Meeting House at 10 Hampson Street, Kelvin Grove (the photo is of the downstairs meeting area), where Friends worship from 10 am - 11 am each Sunday.

Other Quaker Meetings are held in Redlands and Brookfield on fourth Sundays each month, and in regional Queensland at the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands. For a complete list of Meeting for Worship, click anywhere in this sentence.

Events — Open Gardens Scheme at Quaker Meeting House

The Brisbane Quaker Arboretum at 10 Hampson Street, Kelvin Grove is open annually as part of the Open Gardens Scheme. The open days offer guided tours to see rare and endangered species, plant sales, morning and afternoon teas —for more information on the dates for the open days contact the Meeting House caretakers or the Open Gardens Scheme website.

Who we are

The Religious Society of Friends began in Britain in the 17th century with the teachings of George Fox, and is now worldwide. Around 2000 people worship in Quaker Meetings in Australia. There are around 100 Quakers in Queensland.

The name 'Quakers' began as a nickname in 1650. Members of the Society call one another 'Friends'.
